Hammer Toe Deformity develops in high arched or flat feet more easily than in normal feet. This is due to the abnormal shape of the feet. This happens because of the tension tendons between the top and bottom of the toe , in the case of high arched feet. Because of the high arch the toe will naturally get pulled down and cause a deformity. This is something which is unavoidable unless the high arch of the foot can be straightened. Treating the affected toe may be an easier proposition. When the problems started, what activities or shoes make them worse, and if other parts of the foot are painful. Plantar Fascitis. A thick fibrous band of connective tissue originating on the bottom surface of the calcaneus (heel bone) and extending along the sole of the foot towards the five toes. It has been reported that plantar fasciitis occurs in two million Americans a year and 10% of the population over a lifetime. Hammer, claw, and mallet toes are toes that are bent into an odd position. They may look strange or may hurt, or both. These toe problems almost always happen in the four smaller toes, not the big toe. Hammertoe, claw toe, and mallet toe can be treated by wearing roomy footwear, using pads and supports in the shoe, and doing toe exercises. Over-the-counter pain medication may also provide relief. In severe cases, surgery may be an option. Talk to your pharmacist before purchasing anti-inflammatories as these medications may be contraindicated as they may interact with other medications and medical conditions. Causes The regular practice of stretching exercises can help prevent a flexible deformity from becoming a fixed one. Taping or splinting the toes may also help to hold them in a normal position, but unfortunately will not lead to a permanent straightening of the joints. or cavus foot is one of the most common foot problems. It is a structural foot abnormality wherein the curved part of the foot arch that runs from the heel to the toe is very high. When the arched middle part, or the gap between the underside of the foot and the ground is more, the amount of pressure exerted on the instep as well as the metatarsal bones is more, and that affects the stability of the ankles in an adverse manner. It also leads to poor shock absorption. If you have a claw toe and are experiencing pain, call our Glastonbury or Middletown office to make an appointment If you’ve lost only partial flexibility due to hammer toe , a semi-invasive technique is often used. The surgeon will make a small incision into your toe to release the tendon. If your hammer toe has caused almost total or total loss of mobility, pieces of bone may also be removed in order to straighten and re-align the toe. Pins will be inserted into the remaining bone. If this inflammatory condition persists for long then it may also cause the tendons to become thickened. In some cases bumps or nodules may also develop within the tendons. Achilles tendonitis may also turn into a long term issue or it may also lead to damages to the tendons. Claw toe deformity can develop as a complication of fracture of the tibia. The deformity develops following a tibia fracture is basically due to adhesions of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) and flexor digitorum longus (FDL) muscles to the surrounding structures under or just proximal to the flexor retinaculum. Treatment of Hammer Toe will depend on the severity of the condition. If attention is sought early enough before the condition becomes permanent, the toes can be straightened and measures can be taken to prevent a reoccurance. If Hammer Toe is caused by a person being flat-footed, a podiatrist can create a custom-molded shoe that will give adequate support and aid the toe muscles. which is basically an extra growth of bone possibly due to your foot structure. As this outgrowth of excessive bone rubs against other toes, there is friction between the toes and a corn forms for your protection. Due to daily pressure on the bent toe joint, corns or calluses frequently form on the top of the middle toe joint, or, on the tip of the toe. The bent toe can be painful, and make it difficult and uncomfortable to properly fit into shoes. When the joint's still pretty flexible, it may be possible to treat the condition entirely without surgery. This will likely be accomplished by your podiatrist prescribing orthotics (fancy shoe inserts designed specifically for you) that will help correct the imbalance in your foot that's causing the hammertoes. Medical Conditions – a number of diseases can negatively affect the nerves and muscles surrounding the toes. Diabetic Neuropathy, for one, can trigger muscular damage that can lead to this type of toe deformity. Apart from diabetes, individuals suffering from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, spinal cord tumors, polio, charcot-marie tooth disease and stroke are more likely to also acquire curled toes. What are the Symptoms of Claw Toe? For individuals with severe deformity, physicians often advise the use of arthroplasty that works to surgically straighten the curved toe by cutting off the head of the proximal phalanx that triggers this curling effect. Ideal Feet Can Help! Hammer toe is frequently caused by wearing narrow, too tight and too short in length shoes. These types of ill-fitting shoes force your toe into a bent position. Over time, your tendons and muscles tighten and shorten, causing the characteristic downward bend. Hammer toe is often seen in women who wear high heels or poor fitting shoes or in children who continue to wear shoes they have outgrown. In some cases, the condition is present at birth. Those patients with loss of pain perception wear sandal with straps very tight for getting to know they are wearing footwear, these sometimes leads to compression for prolonged periods leading to blisters/infectionsclaw toe wiki
